Walking, the focus of much activity:
The Offa's Dyke National Trail from Prestatyn to Chepstow goes through Trefonen. Many walkers from all over the world visit the village while walking this 177 mile ancient Marches Border footpath. In addition the village is on the Shropshire Way which is a series of 27 routes spanning some 297 miles of footpaths through the county. Route 24 passes through Trefonen.
In 2013 the Heritage Group published "Trefonen Walks". A selection of 6 local walks, starting from the QEII Jubilee Field in which significant historical features give you the chance to explore our rich heritage. It is important to know that the green environment of Trefonen was once tinged with the black of coal.
The "Trefonen Walks" booklet is available free of charge from the Village Shop and can be downloaded here.
In 2018 to commemorate the centenary of WW1 four new trails were created in Trefonen, Treflach and Nantmawr. These WW1 Centenary Trails use local footpaths and roads to take you past the houses where the 31 people killed from the villages in WW1 lived. They are marked with blue plaques on or close to the houses and can be followed by blue WW1 waymarkers and a map which contains all four walks. The maps can be found in dispensers at Trefonen shop, Trefonen Playing Field (next to the WW1 interpretation panel) and treflach Green (again next to the WW1 interpretation panel) More detail can be found on the Lights Out section of this website and the maps can also be downloaded from www.shropshiresgreatoutdoors.co.uk/walking/war-walks/
The Shropshire Council Parish Paths Partnership involves groups of volunteers working with the Council to help maintain Public Rights of Way. The work undertaken includes path condition surveys, waymarking, path clearance and some stile repairs. Whilst the Oswestry group of the Ramblers host a P3 group that covers most of the Oswestry Rural Parish, there is an active Trefonen and Treflach P3 group, contact details for which can be found on their website: https://ttp3web.wixsite.com/website or in Activities. While many members of this local group are members of the Ramblers, it is not a pre-requisite. Any volunteers to help with this important work are welcome.
Each year on the bank holiday weekend at the end of May there is the famous Trefonen Hill Walk Weekend. This enables walkers and runners of all abilities to enjoy our magnificent countryside, whilst we raise money for two charitable causes outside our village. Full details of all the events can be found here.
