In the last 40 years the UK has lost 60% of its wildlife. In 2019 it was reported that at least 40% of our wildlife is in decline and 15% at risk of extinction. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has a 25 year plan and aims to provide 500,000 hectares of additional wildlife habitat. As part of this plan, in August 2020 five local authorities began piloting Local Nature Recovery Strategies. In January, Trefonen WI members discussed an idea for a campaign from the National WI: protect your nature space to create wildlife friendly communities. ​
We have decided that we should pursue this idea locally. We are gathering information on what is happening in our area, what we can identify as special, what needs protection, what links we have with individuals and organisations which protect wildlife, which projects are currently happening.
This is no longer a WI initiative. We now have a group of people from across the area meeting to pursue this project.  We are also in contact with Shropshire Wildlife Trust and making them aware of our work which could contribute to their 'Towards a Wilder Britain - Creating a Nature Recovery Network'.
